Book Summary: From the bestselling author of When I’m Gone and Working Fire comes a gripping novel about a mother, her missing daughter, and the dark secrets that engulf them.
Ever since her husband’s death collided with the birth of her daughter, postpartum depression has taken hold of Veronica Shelton. She can’t sleep, can’t work, and can’t bear to touch her beautiful baby girl. Her emotional state is whispering lies in Veronica’s ear: You’re a bad mother. Your baby would be better off without you. But not everything can be reasoned away by Veronica’s despair. Can it?
After all, the break-in at her house happened. The disturbing sketches she found in her studio are real. So is the fear for her daughter’s safety—especially when Veronica comes home to a cold, silent nursery and a missing baby.
As she turns from victim into primary suspect, Veronica realizes that only she can find her daughter. Authorities aren’t helping. They’re only watching. Veronica’s concerned mother has suddenly vanished from her life. And a new friend seems to be keeping secrets from her too. Now, reality is waiting for Veronica in a dark place—because someone’s mind games have only just begun.
Book Review: Raw, intense and downright shocking, are a few words to describe The Waiting Room. The story begins with Veronica, a mother attending therapy to deal with her post partum struggle, and the loss of her husband. As the narrative progresses, a kidnapping of her daughter shifts the plot into overdrive.
Within the chapters, Veronica presents herself as a strong willed mother who would do anything for her child. From escaping the cops, to unraveling suspicion, Veronica’s character is not to be messed with. My motherly instinct kicked in, and I rooted for her to find her daughter. I also once went through a mild case of post partum, granted it was not as severe as her condition, but it helped me relate to her emotionally.
The greatest part about Emily Bleeker’s writing is you never know where it’ll lead you. By the end, I was flabbergasted and I couldn’t believe the twist! All the confusing parts were better explained and it all came together. It started to make sense and it definitely threw me for a loop! Endings like that, remind me how much I love thrillers. You never know what is lurking under the surface of it all. Emily is a superb storyteller and I look forward to reading more works by her in the future!

About The Author
I’m a mom of four, an author and Chicagoland native. My first novel, WRECKAGE, was released by Lake Union Publishing March 2015. My second book, WHEN I’M GONE, hit shelves March 2016 and is a Wall Street Journal bestseller. My third book, WORKING FIRE, will meet the world in August 2017. I love all my book babies! I’m learning to balance life as a stay-at-home mom with my life as a writer. Both come with a lot of laughter, tears and a shocking amount of Diet Coke.
